What are your commercial electric vehicle options? Why you should switch your business to EV

Electric vehicles are the future.

And, yes, exchanging all your current commercial vehicles for EV commercial vehicles is quite the overhaul. But, on looking at the benefits, it’s absolutely worth it.

Not only are EV vehicles more efficient, but they’re also far cleaner and cheaper to fuel. Not to mention how much better they are for the environment, and of course, how much they help to tackle the issue of climate change.

Besides, the UK is poised to bring forward its ban on fossil fuel vehicles to 2030. That’s less than 10 years away. And it’s never too early to start preparing for the future.

EVs were introduced to the market several years ago now, and an electric fleet has been a viable option in the UK since 2018, thanks to the installation of many charging stations throughout the country. And in 2020, sales of EVs in the UK rose to well over 100,000.

In this article, we’re going to look into the many benefits of switching to EV commercial vehicles before looking into what your options actually are. Then we’ll wrap up with a brief conclusion.

Let’s get straight to it.

Benefits of switching to EV commercial vehicles

There are several reasons to consider, or start implementing, your switch to EV commercial vehicles. Let’s examine each of them in turn.

A Very Real and Significant Benefit to the Environment

We all know how damaging regular vehicles are to the environment. They use up a lot of fossil fuel and emit carbon dioxide, which then pollutes the surrounding air. And this has long been considered a trigger for global warming.

Hence the Climate Change Act of 2008 was introduced to bring these nasty emissions under control. The aim is to make the UK a “net-zero” emitter of greenhouse gases by 2050.

And a key factor in achieving the government’s targets will be the switch from fossil fuel vehicles to EV vehicles. Of course, in the short term, the use of hybrid vehicles can certainly help to the switch to EV, but in the long term, the aim is to have only EV vehicles on the road.

The switch to EV vehicles would enable a whopping 40% cut in carbon emissions, which is very sizable and will clearly make that huge difference that is becoming so desperately needed.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Corporate social responsibility is not just some buzzword. It’s about a moral imperative that businesses need to take on board. Besides, being seen to be doing the right thing is something that can really boost a business’s reputation and show them in a good light.

In a competitive marketplace, it could even be the deciding factor in who a potential client would go to. So corporate social responsibility is good business all around.

Number of EV Charging Points

EV Charging points are not as few and far between as they have been in previous years. There are now more than 35,000 charge point connectors across the UK. Not bad hey? And they are spread to a whopping 13,000 locations. So when you factor in your own charge points against this, you can see that switching to EV for the long term (even if you have to switch to hybrid vehicles in the short term) is certainly viable or even preferable.

Financial Benefits and Cost Savings

Charging a commercial EV is far cheaper than filling up a traditional commercial vehicle. Driving an EV vehicle, rather than a petrol vehicle, is estimated to save a very nice £100 per 1,000 miles.

But that’s not the only financial incentive. You can get a discount on the price of brand new low-emission vehicles through a grant the government gives to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers.

And in addition to grants for cars, motorcycles and mopeds, there are also grants available for vans big and small, taxis, and trucks.

For small to medium sized vans, the grant will pay for 20% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of £8,000. For taxis, the grant will pay for 20% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of £7,500. And for large vans and trucks, the grant covers 20% of the purchase price, up to a maximum of £20,000, for the first 200 vehicles.

And that’s not even including the grants available for the installation of charge points.

EV Commercial Vehicle Options

Tesla may be the best known brand for EVs, but more manufacturers are joining the fold all the time, including the likes of BMW, Porsche, Nissan, and Aston Martin.

Or if you’re in need of a truck or two, that’s certainly doable too. Check out this driverless electric truck:

Conclusion

You will have to switch to EV commercial vehicles at some point, and with the benefits it can make to your business and to the environment, it may even be worth considering making the change sooner rather than later if you deem it sufficiently feasible for your business, and if you have sufficient budget.

You will need to thoroughly assess the situation, consider the finances, and your typical routes. And if you do decide to go EV, good on you. You’ll be doing your business a great favor, and making the world a better place.
